DPhil Musculoskeletal Sciences

Lachlan ArthurI am an aspiring orthopaedic surgeon from Australia, with an interest in ensuring equitable access to surgical care globally. I am currently completing the penultimate year of my medical degree at the Australian National University, where I also completed a Bachelor of Philosophy with Honours in Medical Research as a Tuckwell Scholar.

I will be taking leave from medical school to complete a DPhil in Musculoskeletal Sciences on a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford. Under the supervision of Professor David Murray and Dr. Stephen Mellon at the Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre, my research will seek to improve outcomes of unicompartmental knee replacements, especially for low-volume surgeons. This will be with a focus on the Oxford Knee, the world’s most widely used unicompartmental knee replacement.

I am a keen long-distance runner and am looking forward to running marathons and ultra-distance events across the UK and Europe during my time at Oxford. I also love Australian Rules Football (AFL) and cricket. I hope to try my hand at rowing with the Green Templeton Boat Club too!
